A Hub for Visual Storytelling: The Center for Cartoon Studies

White River Junction is proud to host one of the only Master of Fine Arts programs in cartooning in the world—the Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS). Founded with inspiration from pioneering cartoonist Allison Bechdel, CCS has nurtured award-winning artists whose work appears in esteemed publications like The New Yorker. The school’s emphasis on visual storytelling and self-publishing attracts students and professional artists from across the globe.

Beyond classrooms, CCS influences the town through gallery exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations, making White River Junction a vital center for contemporary comics and graphic novels.

A Vibrant Arts Ecosystem

The creative spirit extends well beyond CCS. Historic buildings throughout downtown house galleries, studios, and indie comic shops, creating a landscape where art and community flourish together.

JAM (Junction Arts & Media) stands out as a community arts center and media hub, offering workshops, film screenings, and vital support for local creators. JAM champions free expression, media literacy, and public access to the arts.

An audience of older adults sits in colorful mismatched chairs, listening attentively. The setting is casual and creative, with a lava lamp and electronics visible on a side table, giving the space a community arts vibe.
